Catching up
2005-02-22, 9:37 a.m.

No, I didnt disappear, die or completely lose interest. Been busy sculpting my body. Heres a brief history.

From 1/15/05

First day tracking EVERYTHING. Actually measured my coffee cup (12oz) and exactly how much sugar (2.5tsp) I use per cup. What a surprise. Gumbo later today. More surprises in store I think. Will have to build food entries for some of our (my) favorite dishes. Blood pressure from 1/13/05 was 150/85. First day on blood pressure meds (hydrochlorothiazide)

From 1/17/05

First day at work under the new plan. Hope I remembered what I had for lunch correctly. Hit up the scales at work. That diuretic must have contributed some water wieght loss. No way I lose 3lbs in only 3 days. Blood pressure is marginally better at 134/84.

From 1/19

Hit up the BP machine again. 150/95. Not exactly lower. Maybe itll take a few more days to really kick in.

Heres a laundry list of weight and BP readings since my physical follow up in January.
Date BP Weight
1/13/05 150/85 265
1/17/05 134/86 262
1/19/05 149/95 261.25
1/25/05 137/91 260.75
1/27/05 139/93 260
1/31/05 131/84 260
2/3/05 130/90 259.25 finally starting regular exercising
2/7/05 140/88 258.25
2/10/05 132/88 256.75
2/15/05 139/93 254.75
2/21/05 136/86 252.25

So - broke down and joined the Y. Did a fitness assessment. Evaluator agreed to let me live provided I start getting my ass in shape. Had already spent some time on the treadmills. Got an appointment to learn how to use all the fancy resistance training machines, actually started taking a step aerobics class and have been better about getting to the gym and working.

In that assessment, didn't do too bad in upper body strength, flexibility and work potential. Sucked mightily in abdominal strength and oxygen uptake (smoke much in the past??). And the BMI - not where it ought to be.

The past 6 weeks are my start at getting more fit. I have several milestones to hit on the way to my ultimate goal of 200 lbs by years end. First is to get under 240 by the time we fly to Florida in April. That leaves me about 7 weeks to drop another 13 lbs or so. Very do-able. Next target is 220lb by 7/4/05. Then, I'll decrease my drop rate from 0.25lb/day to 1/8 lb per day and cruise my way down to 200 by New Years.

That's still 20 or so pounds above what is supposed to be "ideal" for my height (72.5"). But I think after a year, I'd like to get into a maintainence mode for a while and see if I can keep my cholesterol and BP in check without medications.

So that's what's been happening inside my head the last few weeks. Now that the weight loss has some impetus, I'd like to think it would be nice to help keep track of it here, along with keeping specific notes using my Fit Day program. I highly recommend that program. A real eye opener as far calorie tracking goes. Not at all difficult to use. Can be found at http://www.fitday.com Check them out.

Another great place - for quitting smoking http://www.quitnet.org Check them out too.
