Good Day for Rodents
2006-06-20, 5:09 p.m.

Day 667 Yesterday was a Good Day for the Rodents

Had to get that 666 off of the top of the page. Not that Im superstitious or anything, but, yknow just to be safe, ok?

So no (dead or otherwise) woodchucks to come home last night. Bit of a relief in a way. Getting tired of having to bury the poor little bastards. But at least the beans are safe.

Cut the rhubarb over the weekend. That means only one thing: Rhubarb pie coming to a kitchen near me, and soon!

Yesterday morning, I was sitting in a very stimulating spec review meeting. Ran from 9 to 10 am. At about 9:15 we noticed that we could hear the rain literally pounding on the roof some 20 feet over our heads, through a suspended ceiling and tons of heating ducts and Ethernet cabling. Not unusual to hear a good solid downpour like that. Got out of the meeting, headed for my desk, passed by a bank of windows on the way. Still raining, but not too bad. Once at my desk, checked emails. Found one from our groups secretary. Posted at 9:27am something like this:

Green Nissan Sentra, License XYZ 123, your sunroof is open.

Boy, that sucked. Wonder if they had to swim home?

A sure sign that our business is up for sale: No roof leaks during the rain yesterday. Well, at least in the building. Prospective buyers have been touring, dont want them thinking big brother doesnt maintain the place. They actually spent a ton of money last year re-doing the roof for the second time in the 4 years weve been in this building. Used to be a joke, every time it rained, some people had to put up plastic tarps like tents over their more sensitive gear so it wouldnt get wet. Weve had equipment worth $10K $40K (small stuff some of it only PC sized) ruined by our leaky roof. Finally, they get the roof fixed and were up for sale.

Oh yeah someone redesigned our lobby too. Nice couch & chairs, end tables, objects darte, fancy schmancy signs (not done up in the corporate trade dress either), all to impress our future owners. Hope it works.

Cindy has been civil (and sober) the last couple of days. Not reading anything into it, but I do make an effort to return the civility when its there. Even try to offer a compliment every now & then, and really, REALLY watch the sarcasm. Its so easy to just whip out some wicked evil sarcastic comment sometimes. Its hard to reign it in on a regular basis. But that was the theme of one of the Al-Anon readings for last week, so I figured maybe Id try it on for a while. Itll be a lot harder to do when shes into the sauce and asking the same freaking questions 6 times an hour. Thats when I find it necessary to just leave the room and go hide someplace. Everyone (me, kids, the girls) does it. Shes in such a state of denial, she cant figure why no one hangs around after she gets into her second (3rd, 4th, what ever) jug of grog. If we all vamoose, she cant piss us off with her endless cycles of the same slurred questions, and we cant upset her with our caustic, sarcastic remarks. Sarcasm runs strong in the males of the family.

Aerobics tonight, another 5K race coming up on Saturday. Think Ill go a little harder with the cardio Wednesday & Thursday, then take Friday off. Rest up, ya know? Maybe hit this race with a bit of a plan in mind. Time to beat? Last 5K was a miserable 27:45. Like to take 2 minutes off that. Pacing its all in the pacing. Need to find someone thats planning on running 8:15-ish miles, cuz I have no clue how to run at a pace anymore.
