Mumbo Gumbo

Day 56 Mumbo Gumbo

Now I remember what I did after I got home Saturday & had Mr. Deer well hung in the garage. I made a nice batch of Gumbo.

One of the last remaining Great-Aunts of the wiff took a tumble in her apartment a couple of weeks ago. Broke her arm in two places. She now has 24 hr-a-day care in her apartment. In spite of the care (or possibly because of it), Poor Aunt L is getting a wee bit of cabin fever. The wiff offered to head out there and bring a lunch. It'd help out the aide a bit, offer a slight change in scenery, give us a chance to catch up with Aunt L a bit and also give us an excuse to visit eldest son, Z.

As it turns out, gumbo happens to travel pretty darn well. I do a turkey/Andouille gumbo, a lovely dark brown roux chock full of onions & peppers, a pound or so of sausage and maybe 6lbs of turkey breast. Did up the stew part Saturday night, then let it cool. Sunday we grabbed up a nice loaf of bread, a bucket of uncooked rice, our pot of gumbo and hit the road. Also let Z know we were coming so he could build up some anticipation towards getting a big batch of leftover gumbo for meals the next few days. Seems Aunt L and the aide had never tasted the wonder that is gumbo. Well, we did a pretty good job of converting them. Safe to say that we have created another couple of gumbo fans. It's a shame that Aunt L had to wait 85 years to taste gumbo. Glad we had the chance to share some with her. Didn't stay too long, the pain killers she's on do a pretty good job of tiring her out.

Made it over to see Z. He's going to SUNY ESF in Syracuse. Aunt L lives about 15 miles away in Cazenovia. Nice time of year for touring around. Leaves are starting to turn, makes for some gorgeous views. Got the Z man some long johns for one of his labs. He gets to spend 4 solid hours out in the woods every week. This time of year, that can start getting a wee bit chilly. Picked up various other necesseties. Also got to see the house he plans on staying in next year (senior year, thank heavens) Much closer to campus, easy walking distance, even in a Syracuse winter. Rent is about the same, and the house is limited to only 4 residents. Much nicer situation. Only bummer is having to move come mid-May. Have my fingers crossed hoping he can handle it with his friends.

Finally got back home around 7pm. Z's girlfriend J came over and did some laundry. Loved having to walk around the deer hanging in the garage. Always nice to have J over.

Easy day. 4+ hours of driving with no real urges to smoke. Wiff apparently still smoke free too. Yee hah. Gots to think about either butchering that deer or getting him to a processor. Supposed to be warming up by the end of the week.

56 days down, got some gumbo to go.
